Known for his whimsical, bright, bold images, Petaluma-based artist Michael Cheney’s ideas come to him “like a lightbulb on top of my head.” Michael has been creating art professionally since 2005, honing his screen printing, painting, drawing, and general doodling. “My favorite thing to do is watch someone smile ear to ear when they see my art,” he says. In 2018, Drop My Sword, Pick Up My Paintbrush, Peter McEvilley’s short film about Michael’s art and his life, premiered at the Sonoma Independent Film Festival. The title is inspired by Michael's words: “When I found art, I dropped my sword and shield and picked up my paintbrush.”
