Worn sections, stains, rips and chafe points are a natural part of saving these sail cloths from the landfill. In her Landfall Leatherworks line of water resistant sail cloth bags, the cloth itself plays a large role for designer Emma Casey. Each sail is distinct with different features and hardware that are sort of begging to be showcased: grommets, hanks, zig zag stitch patterns, porthole windows, tell tales, bolt rope edges. When I roll out an old sail, I am constantly making aesthetic decisions about which part of the sail to feature on which bag style. No two bags are alike, and each tells the story of its former life at sea in the scars and wrinkles of the sailcloth.
