Nico van Dongen is originally from The Netherlands where he received a Master’s of Fine Art in Photography at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), The Hague. He resides in San Francisco and works as a designer and fine art photographer. He expresses his creative practice as one in which he visualizes without pretense, seeing art in everything that surrounds him. Nico believes that art doesn’t just feed one’s soul–art is a relationship that is temperamental and demands a response that is pure. Art is always one step ahead, the process is always critical and challenging.
The journey of the “Concerning Trees” project started in 2015. Botanical studio photography taught him to closely observe and capture what grows in our natural world. The transition from blossom to tree was enormous for Nico: Capturing that inner feeling of release as well as raised awareness, when you are amongst trees. These time-based photographs allow you to stand in the light as he perceives it; surreal and in motion. The visual impression of the final multi layered image, allows the mind to float between space and time for one moment.
