Hideki Iinuma / Wood / Figure / Watershadows

"Muse for the Modern Age" celebrates the bold, self-possessed women of Hideki Iinuma’s sculptural world. Hideki carves female figures using both modern practices and the old ichiboku-zukuri technique (wherein the head and torso are carved from a single block of wood), common in Japan until the 10th century.

• Materials – Cherry Wood; Painted in thick coats of acrylic paint, which still allows the wood grain to show through.

• Care: Sculptures are coated with acrylic paint and don't require complex care. If dust accumulates, it may cause stains, so please dust it at least once every six months. Please do not touch it with your hands as much as possible. If it were to continue to be exposed to direct sunlight for 20 years, the color of the red may fade. If you want to store it in the warehouse for a long time, you should wrap it in a cotton cloth. The tree is breathing, so do not seal it in a plastic bag.

Adorned in intricate, fashion-forward decoration, Hideki’s figures are both ethereal and commanding—icons of contemporary femininity and sexuality. Their presence is effortless yet powerful, embodying a muse for the modern age: independent, expressive, and unafraid to take up space. They stand as testaments to identity and art as a reflection of the ever-evolving female spirit.

Born in Matsumoto (Nagano Prefecture) in 1975, Hideki Iinuma has spent academic years and with exhibitions in Tokyo, Nagoya and France and has exhibited additionally in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and The Netherlands. His artistic creative abilities gained international recognition in Europe, even before Japan. This is his first show in the US.
