Atmosphere Candle Care

Poet and/the Bench Atmosphere candles use a vegetable-soy wax blend for clean burning, and certified clean fragrance and essential oils. We searched for a long time to find a sustainable vessel for the bowl, and located our reusable porcelain bowls in the UK through a designer that practices sustainable design. The bowls are food safe; though they are not microwavable due to the gold on the rims.

We conducted a lot of R&D to get a strong scent throw (how faint or strong the fragrance flows through the air, and how much it permeates a space) when both cold (not lit) and hot (when lit). Scent life will depend on how the candle is stored and the amount of air that comes into contact with the candle.

Candle Storage

  • Temperature and light exposure are two key factors in candle degradation, which can impact the scent throw. If you will not be burning your candle anytime soon, keep yours boxed and in a cool, dark place (like a cabinet) until use. If you want it visible and on display, you can keep it under a glass cloche so the scent is preserved until your next burn.

Optimal Burning Instructions

  • Trim Your Wick
You have likely read about trimming wicks–it works! It’s a way to avoid sooting / smoke and overheating. Carbon may actually build up on the wick causing the candle to burn hotter than intended if left untrimmed so trimming helps to prevent overheating of the bowl when burning for long periods of time. When the candle has returned to solid, trim the candle wick to 1/4" before each use; you can use a regular scissor or get fancy and buy a specialty wick trimming scissor. Trim off the burned part of the wick and collect it in a tissue so you don't drop into or discolor the wax.

  • First Burn
We know you’re excited to fill your atmosphere with these luxurious scents! We encourage a long enough first burn of your candle to ensure the top layer of wax becomes liquid. This preps it for even burning on subsequent lighting and helps to prevent the candle from tunneling.

  • Straighten / Recenter Wicks
After blowing out your candle, if needed, you can use a long tooth pick or thin skewer to ensure that the wicks are back to the center area of the bowl. This also helps them continue to evenly burn the wax and prevent tunneling.

  • Burn Time
We don’t recommend burning your candle for longer than 4 hours at a time. Too long, and the vessel can overheat. Also once there’s only approximately 1/4-1/2” of wax left at the bottom of the bowl, we suggest that you no longer burn the candle as it can overheat and potentially cause a fracture to the vessel. See the last step for how to clean your bowl for reuse.

  • Protect Your Surface
Heat can damage your table top or shelf, so we recommend that you protect the surface on which your candle sits. We have lovely felt and leather coasters that can be purchased (while supplies last) and used or if you have something similar already, please do use it for any delicate surface and remember to only burn candles on a flat, even or level surface.

  • Avoid Drafts
To protect the life of your candle and for safety, avoid placing candles near fans, vents, or open windows, as the wind can cause the flame to blow and burn more quickly.
  • Responsible Burning
Safety first! Please burn within sight and keep your candle off flammable surfaces and away from flammable objects, pets and children. If your candle container is too hot to touch, has a dislodged wick, if you’ve dropped it and it has a crack or chip in the vessel, please do not burn your candle. And this goes without saying, but a nice reminder, don't forget to extinguish the candle when you leave a room or go to sleep.
Reuse Cleaning Instructions
  • When there is 1/4-1/2” of wax remaining, you can use the Freeze Method to get the wax out of the bowl in order to reuse it for ice cream, yogurt, matcha or your precious jewelry. Once the candle bowl has returned to room temperature, put it in the freezer for a few hours or overnight. The cold hardens and shrinks the wax, making it easier to remove. Try flipping it over to see if easily pops out. If not, gently use a butter knife, wooden popsicle stick, or spoon to make space between the bowl and the wax in order to loosen it out. Once out, you can wash the bowl with warm water and dish soap to remove any remaining residue. Note: there is some risk that the bowl can crack upon being frozen if it’s not properly acclimated to temperature changes.
