In 1881 Brothers August and Conrad Bauscher found the Gebrüder Bauscher Porzellan - Fabrik am Bahnhof Weiden (Bayern), a specialist manufacturer of hotel porcelain. A New York subsidiary opened in 1895; business continued to expand over the decades and by the 1930s, the US represents a substantial portion of sales. War time exports are halted and more than 2 million pieces of porcelain wares are destroyed by bombs. In the 1950s production again ramps up and in 2021 the company will celebrate its 140th anniversary.
As part of the Poet and/the Bench small-batch maker philosophy, we believe there are treasures of objects in existence from other eras that both deserve our artistic appreciation and reuse for the health of the planet. For our Found collection, we primarily collect from the 50's-70's, including Mid-Century Modern from Scandinavia, Japan, Europe and the US as well as German Op Art. We visited Copenhagen and wrote a short post about on our Travelogue, and if you're a mid-century fan, we highly recommend the Designmuseum Danmark.
