We are excited to present our first Art-Full Conversation. In this series, we are thoughtfully pairing a chef and one of our artists for a chat over a communal dinner where the convergence of food culture, art and inspiration meet. We have always envisioned Poet and/the Bench to be a gathering place for lively dialogue, discovery and appreciation of artistic expression. This series broadens our mission through an amplified culinary experience.
Volume 1: Encountering the Unexpected

In the spirit of the traditional Souk, where wandering the mazes of a marketplace brings surprises around every corner, we are offering a thematic, regionally influenced menu to pair with our first Art-Full Conversation: Encountering the Unexpected, including 5 courses* that are seafood and vegetarian forward:
Marinated olives with citrus and herbs
Orange blossom honey cashews
Ginger mint shrub (non-alcoholic)
Fig and bourbon smash (alcohol)
Shaved baby carrots, rose yogurt, fenugreek, pomegranate and mint
Tuna tartare with 'Souk Style' vinaigrette and anchovy breadcrumbs
Butternut squash with pan-roasted wild mushrooms with brown butter and sage
Monterey squid and napa cabbage in a 'Souk style' harissa sauce
Walnut, pistachio and rosewater baklava
*some ingredients are pending what's available at the farmer's market
Chef Antonio Candelario of De La Terra Kitchen specializes in modern Mediterranean soul food. His research and experimentation on different cultures and their culinary heritage have taken him all over the world seeking out foods and flavor. From his Caribbean roots to a love of North African cuisine and many cultures in between, Antonio's craft is refined and full of layers and surprises.
Augmenting the evening's sense of wonder, we will discuss artist Jeffrey Palladini's latest thesis, Thread Series, among other artworks. In his Thread Series, the random looping and twisting patterns of a dropped length of twine are a seductive metaphor for the way we get from our aims and dreams to the outcomes. But, as Jeffrey reflects, “the more you try to exert control the random creeps in, [and] it turns out that the more you try to represent the random the more control creeps in.”
Not unlike Antonio's art of the meal and Jeffrey Palladini's observation of cultural and social issues, Poet and/the Bench co-founders, goldsmith and jewelry designer Jeffrey Levin and curator and branding specialist Bonnie Powers' inspirations flow from the many journeys they have encountered in their creative lives and have been realized through different mediums.
The paths we follow undoubtedly have elements of the unexpected. This framework will be the foundation for compelling conversation.
A few notes:
Food Allergies: This meal includes nuts, seeds and shellfish of the mollusks variety as well as dairy and gluten. We'd love everyone to enjoy the meal, but for this small seating we cannot accommodate meal modifications or severe food allergies which prevent sufferers from being in the same immediate area as their allergen.
Our Location: We will host the gathering at Poet and/the Bench, making adjustments to our small space for seating at one long table. Please, in advance, forgive the tight quarters. Due to space constraints and for the benefit of intimate conversation the number of attendees is limited.
Alcohol/Non-Alcoholic Beverages: There will be complimentary and complementary options in the course of the evening of both limited alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic beverages.
